Thomas Tate's profile

Using Recycled Materials in Construction

Thomas (Tom) E. Tate draws on experience in construction planning and management to own and serve as president of Tate Builders, Inc., a design and build company specializing in custom homes on Martha's Vineyard. Under Thomas Tate’s leadership, the company maintains a focus on superior workmanship, environmentally conscious designs, and meticulous engineering.

In the restoration of a 1937 waterfront compound, Tate Builders returned the home to its original splendor by painstakingly locating recycled materials. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that the use of recycled materials in construction projects fosters efficient materials management and the conservation of natural resources.

According to the EPA, builders can incorporate recycled materials into projects in a number of ways. These include using spent foundry sand as the base material at a building site rather than natural soil. The EPA also explains that recycled gypsum and FGD gypsum wall board are suitable for drywall manufacturing. For other features and pieces, such as benches, the EPA encourages the use of recycled wood.
