Figment is a art festival organized by the NYC Burning Man community on Governors Island just off Manhattan. Over one weekend, over 200 participatory art projects are installed on the island. We were invited by Figment to create an installation to spread happiness during the festival. Our original plan was to spell the world “HAPPY” using 100 umbrellas suspended with fishing wire over the moat of the civil-war-era fort on Governor’s Island. Unfortunately, the high winds made this impossible, so we settled for sticking the umbrellas into the ground. We also ended up casing the island on foot as a sort of roving exhibition, collecting happy messages along the way.
