Character Ilustration

Problem
Create an illustration that combines two or more people, places, or things

Approach
This was a fun assignment, with a goal of teaching illustration techniques in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. My conceptual approach was drawn from my coursework in marketing. People buy objects that enhance the image of themselves that they would like to project to the world, and membership in a group is something that people like to indicate with their product choices. These illustrations are meant to stand alone, without an explanation like the one you're reading here. To explore this concept, I chose to fulfill the assignment by combining an animal, because animals are easy to anthropomorphize, with all of the products associated with a group. The second illustration is not an animal, but a cotton q-tip, because I wanted to challenge myself with a non-animal character. My goal was to make it immediately apparent which group each character belonged to using a few products, and I chose groups that are prevalent in a college setting. I'll leave it up to the viewer which subculture each character belongs to. I also wanted to work with patterns, and assembled the background illustrations out of products that are important to each character, setting each one against a backdrop that references their identity. Artwork created in Adobe Photoshop. Some vector objects created in Adobe Illustrator. This book was designed in an academic setting for DES 202–Graphic Design Systems.
