Perhaps because of Disney’s the Little Mermaid, I have always been fascinated by mermaids and underwater illustrations. However, unlike Disney, I wanted to explore some potentially darker themes. My merfolk are not sun tanning beach babes, but shadowy figures mostly hidden in the background, stalking the focal character. The sea is home to some of the most deadly hunters in the world, so I think this darker characterization is fitting.
