Year 2 Restoring Monks Abbey

The aim of the project is to develop your process driven design thinking, explore making and the theory behind materials.

The scope of this project will engage you in a medium scale design project, primarily aimed at developing your design language. During this project, you are encouraged to explore your own design language and interests.
The ruins of Monks Abbey are of the chancel and part of the nave of the 13th/late 14th-century church of the Priory of St. Mary Magdalene, a small monastic cell of the Benedictine Abbey at York. Although a small cell, the monks farmed an extensive estate, which passed into private hands following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century.
The area was probably an early piece of landscaping for ‘public’ benefit incorporating the ruins and there are probably the remains of an ornamental cascade built in the 18th century. In the 19th century the area was given to the city as a recreation ground.
I have chosen to use this space for an art gallery, this will fit within and around the ruins.
