N. Charleston Natatorium - Studio III

N. Charleston Natatorium
_____

The N. Charleston Natatorium is located in North Charleston, South Carolina along the river in an area that was originally designed as a planned industrial community and features a naval shipyard that dates back to 1901. Considering location and historical precedent of the shipyard and waterfront, the idea of vessels began to intertwine with early concept development. It’s important to note that a vessel is more than a container or a receptacle. It has an inherent dynamic quality that allows it to be active and reactive. The vessel develops as a multitude of contrasts that contain their own qualities but yet relate and interact with one another. This continual cycle began to reveal itself through a series of contrasting ideas: separate - combine, shelter - expose, lighten - darken, dependent - independent, etc. Within this industrial setting an obvious contrast arose between the man-made and the natural. This project focuses on utilizing a fusion of organic and industrial elements, while incorporating human comfort ideals, to create a place for the community to come together.
