Thomas Tate's profile

Sights to See on Martha's Vineyard

Thomas E. Tate established Tate Builders Inc. on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in 1983. He continues to serve as the company’s president and owner. In addition to overseeing the construction of custom homes on the island, Thomas Tate has developed an appreciation of the island’s history and community.

Although the island measures less than 90 square miles in size, there is no shortage of sights to see when visiting Martha’s Vineyard. While the calm waters of State Beach may be better suited to families with small children, adventurous vacationers must spend at least one afternoon on the scenic shores of South Beach. Unlike its glamorous Miami counterpart, the Vineyard’s South Beach is perpetually hammered by rough Atlantic waves.

An even more remote locale that must be seen to be believed is Gay Head and its stunning cliffs. The unique clay cliffs are so unusual that they have been protected as an historical landmark. While Gay Head features a lighthouse of its own, the lighthouse located by Edgartown Harbor is a must-see. Between May and October, visitors can tour the lighthouse’s interior and learn about the area’s coastal history. Additional tourist attractions located throughout the island include sunsets at Menemsha Beach, a stop at the Offshore Ale Co. brewery, and the Flying Horses Carousel at the heart of Oak Bluffs.
