Ethan Bates's profile

Film: DADA Performance Clips (2014)

Every aspect of this video's construction was troubled. As a result, I feel like it's not as good as I had envisioned. This is very upsetting, because I put so much foreplanning, effort and time into its production, but I suppose having something to watch is better than nothing.

More than anything, I think the experience is mostly compromised because of the following factors;
camera issues - my usual stop motion camera fails to work. I tried to rectify this for weeks but had no success. After shooting some scenes with my SLR, I gave up, because I believed the quality not good enough to bother with. My friend Sam's camera I was able to use to an okay standard - much of the footage here was shot on his camera. By the time we had a workable camera, I was plagued with other issues.
- Sam's camera would not fit on the construction I had planned to base the camera on, so we had to use a less good structure, leading to fewer well-framed shots.
- the mannequins weren't very easy to use, constantly snapping back into other positions, with their 'suits' falling off repeatedly as the heat from the light loosened the blu-tack holding them together. The set also was damaged and was very unstable as a result.
- time restraints on the dark room meant I had to shoot it all in one evening.
- voice actors fell through, so I had to voice the characters myself.
- my new laptop doesn't like my voice recording software. I had to obtain new software and use an unconventional microphone.

All these problems plague the film. It is okay. I won't be going near stopmotion again for a while now, as my older videos did it so much better. At least I tried.
