600 People Vinyl Zoetrope

Brief: Design a response to the performance ‘600 People’

This was a very open project, in which we could design anything. The perfomance begins by talking about Voyager and the golden record, and whether there is intelligent life elsewhere. My response was to design a vinyl zoetrope, that when it spins on a record player, creates an animation. The problem I had was that you could not see it at first with the naked eye, so I had to work out how to make it so you could view the flat zoetrope the same way you would view the 3D ones.

The way I did this was to make a cog shaped transparent disk to go on top of the record with the animation on, each tooth matching up with one frame of the animation, then having a leaf switch that turned on an LED each time a frame went past. The result was that you can look in to a box and see it animated. The idea is that the designs would advertise the event. It is a local performance, so I imagine that the box and record could be left somewhere such as the millenium gallery, for people to look at it and then be curious to see the show.
