Mei Lanfang
These posters are inspired from Mei’s performance on the stage and Chinese traditional elements. Mei is a famous Peking Opera performer who is a man but only plays women. The frame of the door is a very beautiful craft that represents fortune and happiness in Chinese culture. By practicing and learning from my previous explorations, I started to create a new door for Mei Lanfang. Mei is a metaphorical door for China that spread Chinese traditional art around the world. I used thick, san-serif typeface to represent his male perspective. With the help of distortion, the types are curved, showing Mei’s beauty and softness as a woman on the stage. For the smaller type, I chose a serif typeface because it is elegant and reflects the design in the poster. The types are not only a text for reading, but also they are the forms that designers can develop and play with.
