The "pure and sacred" form of Kannon Bodhisattva, one of Japan's most beloved deities.
Kannon literally means "watchful listening," and is often translated as "the one who sees/hears all". This is indeed the task of the compassionate Kannon -- to witness/listen to the prayers and cries (sounds) of those in difficulty in the earthly realm, and to help them achieve enlightenment.
Sho comes the Sanskrit "Arya," meaning holy.

大慈大悲をもち、この菩薩の名を唱えるだけで全ての災厄から救う。
三十三応身といわれるように様々な姿に変化し、人の四苦八苦を直ちに救済します。これは、観音が私たちの願いの多様さに応じて、姿を変えて救うためです。その変化する前の本体、もともとの姿を特に聖観音または正観音と呼びます。 
「観音」とは苦しみの中にいる人々が一心に観音の名を念じると、直ちにその「音」を「観」じて救われることから観音という名前がつきました。それは単に精神的な悩みや苦しみから救うだけでなく、肉体的、物質的な願いにも応じるとされています。
