Kitchen Bar Stool
A fresh, light-weight design. Incredibly sturdy, yet most of all comfortable.
As much as I like to combine oak and steel, I’m fully aware it has to be well considered otherwise it will look too ‘industrial’ or worse still ‘rustic’.
This stool is an adaption of a previous one I made. The earlier stool had three legs whereas this one has four.
I didn't want to make a stool that had four full height legs so I experimented with the two rear legs coming out at approximately 45 degrees from vertical around 3/4 of the way down a single rear leg.
I wanted the stool to have strong, geometric lines but also a couple of curves thrown in to soften things up.

The seat is made from solid English oak and has been hand-shaped so the back of the users legs are comfortable. The rear corners have been rounded off to echo the subtle curve of the back.
One of the most important aspects of this design was to ensure the back rest be as comfortable as possible. The piece of oak used for the support was steam bent to a shape that cradles the lower back quite nicely.
To get the height and angle right, I called upon several different people of all shapes and sizes. These human guinea pigs sat on the stool whilst I alternated the height and angle of the back until I found the optimum position.

Oak steaming
After steaming for around 1 hour, the piece of oak is bend round a jig and clamped securely.
The warm tones of the oak are well suited to the silver and black distressed steel frame which has been coated with a hard wearing glossy lacquer.
