Zero O'Clock After Impact

In a world, where humans are almost at the point, where we've figured it all out, trouble brews up in the highest echelons of the scientific community. 
 
Cities are becoming well-adapted with the environment, pollution levels are finally subsiding. Electric propultion has been mastered, along with solar and wind/hydro energy sources - the world is just beginning to breathe easier after the self-made genocide by pollution of our planet in the XX and XXI centuries.
 
 
Space elevator stations supply the near-orbit stations and receive the mined materials from the asteroid belt.
Personal transportation for the well-to-do in/around metropolitan areas is handled by the flying modules, that are on constant duty through a sharing, connected platform. Social media is integrated within chip implants or contact lenses, to create an "AR on-demand", direct-connected UI. This allowed to simplify everything that is built and focus on the purpose and minimalism. Technological connectivity of human minds is the standard and the world seems to finally begin to function the way it's supposed to...
...but in the lonely confines of a distant space mission - long out of touch with the rest of human society - a group of scientists decides to destroy it all...
