I designed this bookcover for a contest, where they asked to design the cover for the dutch publication of I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson. Eventually I wasn’t picked as the winner, but I’m still pretty happy with the result. 

 

The story is about twins who go through all kinds of drama. When they were young they split the entire universe into categories, such as the trees, the sky, the flowers etc. They devided al those categories between each other, which explains the title; I’ll give you the sun. 

 

On the cover I wanted to explain the title in an graphic and abstract way. I was looking for some sort of an shape that would represent the universe and the sun. Eventually I came up with an idea to take squares with rounded corners in different colors and place them on top of each other in an different angle. Every line represent one piece of the universe and together they form the universe in total.
