HUFF: HOUSE UNDER FOUR FLAGS
January 2015

For HUFF: House Under Four Flags, Polish artist Marcin Dudek has referenced the shapes and forms of the architecture at Gillman Barracks to construct a 10m x 10m wooden sculptural installation that will double as his studio during his time in Singapore. The instinct to build arises out of the artist’s “Anti-Readymade” aesthetic, which is not simply a reflection of his passion for craftsmanship, but rather, an everyday agenda depicted in many of his other works. The title of the project – House Under Four Flags – references the four founding languages of Singapore, and the ‘flag’ is used as a symbol of laying claim to a space or a piece of land. Space as a commodity is a recurring theme in Dudek’s work, one that is particularly relevant in the Singaporean context.

Dudek’s series of sculptural installations, which take the form of pavilions, began in 2010 with Screen House, a boxy structure he constructed on a rooftop in the Whitechapel area of east London. The work also arose out of the need for a studio space, and the angular design, comprising of simple interlocking walls, was easily disassembled and put together again as its second incarnation, Winter Pavilion. This time, the structure, painted over in primary colours, sat on a green between two council flats, providing a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the implications of enclosed spaces. For Plans for Protection, the original structure of the previous projects was taken apart and laid bare in the gallery space and used as a structure for artworks.

UNIFORM was involved in aiding in sponsorship and communications for this exhibition.
