Through my creative studio, Upanotch, I created this logo and menu for a new Burmese cuisine popup restaurant in New Orleans, Lahpet: A Taste of Burma. It's named for the fermented tea leaves which are the base for this popup's feature dish, lahpet thote, or tea leaf salad.
I was going for a slightly refined version of the sort of primitive lettering you see handpainted along tropical streets. I love that aesthetic but have never had a call for it. Not until I got to tackle a Burmese street food eatery. Incidentally, if you're in the region you should check these cats out. I got to eat most of this menu and I melted.
This work came to me because it's a new project by Mark LaMaire, founder of One World Family, a nonprofit providing relief to Burmese refugees living in Thailand, for which I am the logo designer and webmaster. In fact, 10% of proceeds from Lahpet's sales go to support One World Family initiatives.
