LLOG Exploration Company, Living Quarters

On January 9, 2014 General Marine Leasing (GML) successfully completed an offshore living quarters project, “Delta House”, for LLOG Exploration Company (LLOG) – one of the top private oil and gas producers in the United States. This comprehensive 16-month project included the design and fabrication of a 38-person living quarters package, complete with an attached helipad and emergency generator, for the client’s oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

“GML was extremely excited and proud to be included in this project, having been selected as the service provider out of 11 tendered bidders. The Delta House project was the first of its kind for us. It marks the beginning of a new chapter, as we continue to expand our product and service offerings,” said Billy Derenbecker, Vice President of Operations, General Marine Leasing and Mountain West.

The timeline included a three-month design period in which all structural and architectural plans were completed. The result was astonishing. The 570-ton unit was constructed at GML’s fabrication yard in Belle Chasse, Louisiana (just outside of New Orleans). At the peak of construction, 165 employees worked on this massive steel structure. Once construction was complete, GML’s team worked closely with the Army Corp. of Engineers to gather the permits needed to safely transport the structure across the Algiers Canal levy.

It took two days for the building to be transported from the prefabrication yard, loaded onto a barge, and secured for final transport. The barge departed early the next morning through the Algiers canal, onto the Mississippi River and out into the Gulf of Mexico. Another two days later and 40 miles south of the coastline, the tow arrived safely at its final destination, MC-254A. Unlike traditional latitude and longitude coordinates for our lodges on land, offshore oil projects are identified by the different oil fields in the ocean (i.e. MC = Mississippi Canyon) and plotted to specific locations (i.e. 254A). This project was positioned on top of our client’s production facility that is located approximately 6,500 feet above the ocean floor.

“The experience and expertise of the entire GML staff was really showcased to the market with this project. We received raving reviews from both the client and the inspection team,” said Derenbecker. For a first-time endeavor to go smoothly, and to be completed both ahead of schedule and under budget, is a remarkable achievement that we are particularly proud of for our team.”
