60 MILES TO SILVER LAKE

For this show, I had a Volkwagon Passat cut in half and brought into the theatre. The engine and all electrical pieces were removed, but the fender, doors, console, seats, hood and dashboard all stayed. They were cut into pieces and reassembled in the theatre to create this car.
What you can't see in these photos is if you sat in the car, the radio, glove compartment, cup holders, etc were all still in tact so the actors had as realistic a space to play as possible.

Behind the car was a giant wall of maps. I found old atlases and cut out the maps, then connected them so they would drape over the other show's set like a curtain, and create a backdrop that would allow the car to be the focus, but add an extra layer of meaning and nuance to the set.
Our incredible lighting designer, Juliana Beecher, and sound designer, Andrew Duncan Will, engineered their designs so that the headlights worked and the "radio music" sounded like it was eminating from the car. They helped bring this 3rd character in the play, alive.
