Tacky vs. Sophisticated

This neck piece is based off the contrast between tacky and sophisticated. I drew inspiration from Chuck Close, Chanel's Spring Summer 2015 collection, and Helena Markonsalo dress 'Protect Me.' I was drawn to the delicate line between what is written off as tacky and respected as sophisticated.
Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2015 haute couture exemplifies the concept of turning ‘tacky’ materials into sophisticated respected works of art. I focused on his color schemes and choice of materials. Chuck Close’s use of small square paintings to create a larger image inspired my design composition. I constructed the copper fame using scoring and bending techniques and forming. The stitch work includes peyote, brick, back stitch, circular peyote, and fringe techniques. The orange and iridescent tulle used to back the piece accents and contrasts the blue tones of the seed beads.
