Second Year Architecture: Final Project

This project was our final project for the year. Our class was taken up the West Coast to Elandsbaai to camp out for the weekend. We explored the little town which mainly consisted of holiday houses and, therefore, it is only busy in the peak seasons. It is well known for its surfing and crayfish and there are a lot of mountains with caves filled with khoi-san drawings.
On the last day we were taken to our site and as a group we had to design our own brief based on what we thought was needed in Elandsbaai.

As a group we decided that Elandsbaai needed a space that attracted tourists as well as residents and at the same time employed locals to work there so that the site was occupied all year round and not just in peak seasons. We came to the conclusion that the site should have a restaurant, a multi-functional space, an information centre, a hotel and outdoor spaces.
I created a promenade that extends all the way along the coast to the main beach and town centre so that pedestrians can walk to the site. I designed a restaurant on the jetty with a completely transparent front facade to take in the lovely view. To the right is a multifunctional space which could be rented out or used for an exhibion/event and then further right is the lower ground floor of the hotel.
The stairs next to the multifunctional space leads up to the hotel reception and an information centre where tourists or residents can find out about activities happening in the area such as boat rides, hiking trips and diving. The hotel reception leads onto the first floor of the hotel.
Another set of stairs then takes you up to a lookout deck and a roof garden which leads onto the road above the site. Pedestrians or people who have arrived by car can then enter the site this way.
