An indoor amphitheater at the Rangoli Metro Art Centre is a very interactive space in the heart of Bangalore which attracts people to from all over the city to experience a variety of performances, from theatre to art talks and various other educational shows for children.

Its not a very ‘fancy’ amphitheater as they accommodate up to 120-170 people at a time and the ticket prices range from Rs 50-500/- they have low stone seating .

Because of the low granite stone seating that doesn’t have any back rest they have got a feedback of uncomfortable seats! Hence they are looking for solutions for the seating at the amphitheater, that is easy to maintain, comfortable and stackable.

Design Brief

The Knock Down Seat

The Rangasthala amphitheater has an uncomfortable stone seating. It was a cold stone base without a backrest. The ceiling being low, use of chairs would make the room stuffy.

Thus, I needed to think of a seating arrangement that did not require legs, has a backrest with cushioning. Now it came to my attention that this seating was required to be movable stackable as per need of the client.

Keeping all of the above in mind, I have designed a seat, which is not only cushioned but has a backrest and can be folded as well. this seat can directly be placed onto the tread, and the base and the cushions add an extra height which is comfortable to sit on. When folded this seat can be carried and stacked one above the other.
