“The Calm” is a capsule collection that captures the feeling of tranquility when one is able to overcome those intrusive emotions that distract from happiness, such as sorrow. This project is a continuation of “The Ended,” a collection that dealt with the process of putting on armour and building walls to protect oneself from anxiety and evasive thoughts, which distract from happiness.
Silhouettes are inspired by ancient armour of Europe as well as Japan. The high collars and excessively long sleeves offer comfort and warmth. The extended triangular silhouette is warding off evils that may appear while ones back is turned. The weaving technique was an idea stirred from chainmail. It is also a symbol of peace as weaving can be therapeutic to the agitated person.
Denim offers a multitude of shades of blue, a color of both calm and sorrow. It has also been used for over a century as a protective fabric, first used by workers. The treatments that will be used for a few of these garments will be sun bleaching, to represent the warmth of the sun on the skin and the glint of calm waters, and coating, to give the denim a shine like armour.
