Inspired by a friend's daughter who is seriously into Manga—she wanted a black and white version too—so that she could colour it.
I have used a mixture of Illustrator to generate the lines and body colour and then added painterly effects of the background in Photoshop—just to keep the image from appearing too cold and mechanical.

This is the line version with added shadow—placing the shadow in the artwork early really helps to establish your light sources.
