Qiang is a very ancient ethic minorty in the remote west of China. They are famous for their unique embroidery skills. Although the handcraft is surprisingly beautiful, the products are time-consuming and inappropriate for modern daily life. Life got even harder for Qiang handcraftmen after they suffered the big earthquake in Sichuan Province, 2008,
Shiguo Long, Lingzi Zhang and I volunteered to help improve the design of Qiang products. We went on a field trip to Qiang villages and studied their handcraft. Although we are not professional fashion designers, we made efforts to give a new fashionable look to the old embroidery style. Above are some sample works. These designs were offered to a company selling Qiang embroidery in Tianzifang, Shanghai.
