Founded in 1447 by the 1st Dalai Lama, Shigatse's Tashilompu Monastery holds the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the second highest rank in Tibetan Buddhism.
Translated into English, Tashilompu means "all fortune and happiness gathered here" and was once home to 4,000 monks. Now only 400 reside within its walls.
