Life In Layers
A photographic essay studying the fashions of the homeless
When you become homeless the world changes.  Choices become fewer and more difficult.  In a material world, the homeless become the least material of its inhabitants, surviving with only the clothes on their backs and what they can carry with them.  As everything else is stripped away, their clothing becomes one of the few avenues for expressing  themselves and their choices.

The pictures here record those expressions.  The act of portraiture is necessarily a collaboration...There was no
"taking" these portraits.  There was only their making, and I made these portraits with the active collaboration of the homeless men and women who peer out at us from these pages.  Many have not sat for a picture in a long while, and some made a point of thanking me, saying they felt that making these portraits were a way for them to speak.

Their clothing speaks too, of their style, their individuality, and what's happening in their lives.  And during this harsh winter, clothing can make the difference between life and death.  The people in these pictures are homeless and on the coldest days of winter, this is what they wore.
