Stern Grove Sunday Postcards

INSPIRATION. (below) Inspiration for the different postcard designs.
Maps + type = porn to me.
Reminds me of the intertwining cables of the MUNI lines.
Legible, playful, and visually really stimulating
INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES.
INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES.
CONCEPT COMP 1: THE MAP.
The biggest challenge for this concept was creating a motif that worked for both the front of the card, which needed only major information, and the back, which gave a more detailed description of the performers. The front side was easy...
...and compelling to look at. It even offered a little more geographical information about the event.
But the backs seemed to fall flat, especially in just black and white.
Or they looked too formal in comparison to the funky fronts.
Even if they forced the viewer to have a more interactive, kinetic experience with the information.
CONCEPT COMP 2: MUNI LINES.
The mass of MUNI lines hovering overhead is a recurrent theme in San Francisco. These postcard fronts were as exciting as compelling as the maps...
...and the backs were more abstract and looked much more sculptural
But the tracking was a complete nightmare fraught with unpredictable word spacing and justification
Images weren't allowed for this project, but having a few areas of respite from the words gave the postcards a more concrete, less abstract feel. Once the images were gone, they didn't feel anywhere near as strong as they did initially.
CONCEPT COMP 3: SOUND RIPPLES
The circluar concept was loosely based on the ripple effect of sound. It also provided clear opportunities for distorting and warping the type. This first card was interesting, but the textile effect of having that massive of a block of type created issues with hierarchy.
And when the words were too big, they were almost impossible to read. An oblique font also didn't help...
But finally, the ripple effect really seemed to take shape. And with a few more tweaks, seemed to have some serious potential.
The circular concept also worked really well with blocks of body copy on the back.
And thus, the circular concept won out and I played with a variety of colors to match the mood of the festival.
After one postcard that was WAY too earthy, I amped up the colors to a more summer-friendly palette for the final submissions.
