WORK: Surviving the Open Plan Workspace

Based on photography and typographic elements from time spent researching the open plan workspace, this “survival guide” addresses issues that office workers expressed as their main, everyday problems.  By using these familiar photos and relatable quotes, workers can follow the bite-sized information on how to handle the four main issues (Communication, Privacy, Balance, and Breaks) addressed within the survival guide.  All photographs and information presented within the booklet was gathered after spending a year carefully observing, photographing, surveying, and interviewing workers within various offices.
“WORKERS: Human Touches” is a supplemental booklet designed to accompany the survival guide.  Images were carefully selected to demonstrate the power of human influence on the office without actually showing humans themselves.  After reading the survival guide addressing the problems and showing the dismal “grays” within the office, “WORKERS: Human Touches” provides warm photos and playful captions to show how important human spirit and influence can be in transforming an office.
