Earlewood
A photo essay
For my final project in my last photography class, I had to shoot a photo essay.  I chose to photograph the neighborhood in which I live, Earlewood of Columbia, South Carolina.  Earlewood is one of Columbia's oldest communities, and it has a distinct personality that sets it apart from the rest of the city.  It's like a diverse family.  They also really love their dogs.
Earlewood is not only one of the oldest communities, but also it is the largest downtown community in Columbia.  It contains more than 1,000 homes.
Earlewood has a range of architecture from the 20th century.  Earlewood was a farming area in the 1800s, so farm houses are especially popular.
Earlewood contains high income as well as low income residents.  On Union Street, there is a mix of both.
The disc golf course in Earlewood park was relocated to Earlewood from Myrtle Beach in 1989.  The original course was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo, and the baskets were moved to Earlewood park, where they have resided ever since.
Not only do casual players enjoy the course, but the Gamecock Disc Golf Club of the University of South Carolina meets in Earlewood every other week.
The NOMA Bark Park, which will be contained in Earlewood Park, is nearly finished and will open January 2011.  People in Earlewood really love their dogs, so I fit right in.
My lovely dog, Daisy, basking in the sun in Earlewood Park.
Earlewood contains the largest gay community in Columbia.  The community is not only old but also very diverse.
Earlewood Baptist Church has a small but dedicated congregation.  The church was founded in 1939 with 64 members.  Now, the Earlewood Baptist congregation meets in the morning for a traditional service, and Midtown Fellowship, a separate church that is merging with Earlewood Baptist, meets in the evening for a contemporary service.
Midtown Fellowship was founded in 2005, but it has since grown rapidly.  It currently has more than 750 people attending the weekly gatherings, and though it mostly consists of college students, the adult demographic has started to grow as well.
Devin Colleton, 22, and Robin Coleman, 21, both volunteer at Midtown Fellowship.  Devin plays in the band, while Robin stands at the front desk and answers questions.
