New Girl: Portrait of a Barista

Walking into a local coffee shop where I order my usual, I spotted an unfamiliar face. A new girl looking tired. Disheartened from her barage of customers appearing before her faster than she could produce their special mocha lattes with soy milk and one sugar, she wearliy watched as the line got longer. I sat down at a table close to the counter, sipped my coffee, and started sketching the cast of characters as they entered.

At the end of the breakfast rush the girl sighed with relief. That one moment where she realized "I did it!" I happened to catch her eye at that precise moment before she smiled and finished up her shift. I smiled back and quickly captured her expression on paper.

To the new girl at the coffee shop: Congrats on your first day. I hope to see you tomorrow.
