BCG Branding Project

Project Overview
Year Created: 2015

My Role: Sole Designer for my Guitar Lessons side business

What I did: Brand development, market research, concept development, logo design, identity design, typography, layout, photography, photo colour correction, business card design, graphic design

Project Context: I needed a Brand that would help me stand out as a guitar teacher capable of helping students develop their own, unique creative style. I wanted to create a brand that put education, creativity and individuality at the heart of my brand image.
Logo Rationale
The main shape of the logo is based on a musical whole note which I chose to try and emphasize the educational approach to my guitar lessons. The lower case letters, BCG within the musical note builds on that concept by being loosely based on the positions of the b c and g notes on a musical staff (not entirely accurate due to aesthetic concerns). The g breaks out of the whole note alluding to my focus on individual creative growth. The lower half of the g also echos the shape of an whole note giving the impression of a second whole note. I tried to choose an academic / serious typeface to emphasis how seriously I took the teaching of my students. I chose magenta for the colour of the mark to create a fun, slick, youthful and creative tone for the overall identity. I felt like the colour scheme combined with the serious tone of the typography and and logo resulted in a brand image that was serious about creativity.
Business Cards Rationale
The 3 different designs for the business cards uses guitar tablature to display the fingering positions a student would use to play the B, C and G notes on their instruments (which is obviously a nod to the company name). This cards creative concept was also meant to emphasize the educational focus of the brand.
