Part Tame Part Wild

“PART TAME PART WILD” is inspired from a chapter in the book, State by State: A Panaromic Portrait of America, written by Matt Wellend and Sean Wilsey. It is an infographic of Washington state based on the perspective of Carrie Brownstein. Translating a story into an infographic has brought us to define the design concept, hierarchy of information and color choice in order to make a cohesive set of visual communication.

We decided to use flat, stroked design structure along with a vibrant color pallet for our infographic to maintain a unified design . Hierarchies of information are based on the environment, important events, structure and local facts of Washington.

Every illustration and icons were designed from scratch based on how the writer’s explanation. Using the Fibonacci sequence as a guideline, all text information is sized accordingly in the hierarchy of text.

Using the road in the infographic as a guideline, the reader could follow through the story of the writer in order. Making the west section larger than the east directly correlates to the author’s viewpoint of Washington. The west is seen as the more active and lively part of Washington whereas the east is empty and desolate. Dubbed the Cascade Curtain, the Cascade Mountain Range has become the dividing point between both sides. We used that idea to create a curtain to hold the icons and text information about it.

We designed the west side to look lively and happening but there are some tragedies that we hide on the forest to create a surprise to the reader. Using subtle green color text for the information, it camouflages with the forest so the reader needs to focus on it in order to understand the real story behind it.
