The challenge
IMDb is a leading internet service known for having the most comprehensive movie database on the planet. In 2017, I had the opportunity to participate in a challenge to redesign their movie details page to create a visually appealing and engaging experience while maintaining all important features. My goal was to create a vision for IMDb through a design that is engaging and intuitive.
The vision
After analysing user feedback on online forums and competitor websites, I focused on four pillars to improve the website: Enhance visual content, make content more findable, leverage Amazon affiliation and ensure a consistent experience across devices.
I created visually rich sections, like the top banner and cast portraits and made it easier for users to distinguish the main content from user actions. I have also added a dedicated soundtrack section, where users can listen and purchase the music featured on the film. The advertising approach is now more compelling and ensure that users will get the most relevant offers.
Additionally, I have optimised the mobile website with convenient sections that eliminate the need for endless scrolling, allowing users to easily access the content they want.

The outcome
After completing the designs, I conducted user research with a few participants to compare their experience using the proposal to the original version of IMDb. The feedback was outstanding, with the new design scoring higher in all user perception indicators.
Ease of use, for example, jumped from 70 to 92, and users found the content 26% more engaging (from 75 to 94). The visual appeal scored 98 (a striking 55% improvement over the original version), possibly influencing the 18% increase in likelihood to return.
Furthermore, the website was showcased in several design inspiration online communities, like From Up North. Overall, it was a great experience generating these results for such an interesting theme in just 3 days, making it an excellent design exercise.
