HDB - Like the back of my hand

a hand-stitched soft sculpture work to be featured in HDB Style, a soon-to-be published photo book on HDB flats in Singapore.
The design is based on the Singapore HDB (public housing) which is part of the neighbourhood I know like the back of my hand. it will soon be available as a fabric design for sale at Spoonflower.
The sight of these high-rised public housing is a ubiquitous sight in Singapore. Despite all units following a pre-defined building structure, the different lifestyles pour out into the common corridors connecting all the various individual units.

The multi-cultural aspect that is intertwined into Singaporean living is hinted from the adorned doorways: fairy lights and ketupat for the Malay family, the joss-stick filled altar reveals a Chinese family and a string of mango leaves means an Indian family resides behind those doors.
The soft sculpture work is made to be played with like building blocks, you can arrange in various ways, as a slab-block or point-block, reminiscent of the way these blocks are built in reality; by pre-fabrication.
