The Social Effects of COVID-19 | Mental Health Project

The Mental Health topic interested me for this project as it was something I felt was unexplored and that the idea of health issues with mind is abstract. To define what mental health is, it is “a medical condition is characterized by a significant disturbance of thought, mood, perception or memory.” (Royal Commission, 2019).

There are several issues that can affect and impact how a person develops, some which can be damaging to a person’s mental well being. Aspects like lack of a secure shelter, financial power, basic necessity like food or water are the most frequent causing the rise in mental health, “almost 10,000 young Victorians under the age of 25 are homeless or without stable accommodation. In 2016-17, more than 500 people presented at homelessness services after leaving psychiatric services, an increase of 45 per cent over the last 3 years.“ (MentalHealth Victoria, 2018). This especially showcased itself during the global pandemic of COVID-19, where resources became limited and contact with the outside was close to nothing.

These “significant disturbances” can differ the slightest from person to person and having to visualize each abstract data transforming it into something that can help communicate to our audience would create awareness and something that I feel like exploring more whilst undertaking this topic for my project.

The main intention for all of my designs is to bring awareness to the topic and for my audience to share the topic amongst friends, family or even colleagues.

The narrative of the data found was recording the predicted and future mental health and well being of individuals during stressful times such as COVID-19 and also after COVID-19. The important aspect of the information is that Mental Health is not leaving but is instead becoming more and more worse as time goes on.
