Meditation Terrarium
A virtual experience for mental health

In this modern, fast-paced society, it is becoming increasingly relevant to find small moments of peace and serenity in order to maintain general mental well-being. Many scientists have proven that some of the best practices for this are meditation, grounding and other activities that include connecting with nature. However, it is sometimes difficult to find spaces to do so, specially in bigger cities.

Because of this, we decided to develop a virtual reality, life sized terrarium specially designed for mental peace and meditation practice. Inspired by biomimicry and the relaxing elements inherent of nature, this virtual experience represents a moment of tranquility and repair in the middle of a hectic reality.

Forest bathing, also known as shinrin-yoku, is an ancient practice originated in Japan as a form of ecotherapy. It can be an experience as simple walking through a meadow or even exploring the wilderness. The point is to immerse in a natural environment and consciously connect with everything that surrounds you.

Shinrin-yoku has proven to have a positive impact on mental and physical health. It reduces stress hormone production while improving the mood and unleashing creativity. It can also help lower heart rate and blood pressure, boosting the human body and immune system.

Taking this into consideration, we designed a space that mimics these natural spaces in a wonderland-type setting. Taking inspiration from nature's bioluminescence, warm sunrises and diverse flora, we built a virtual terrarium that offers a break from the chaos of life. It is meant to replicate sounds, sights and sensations found in natural environments, that can be enhanced by the activation of guided meditations. To appeal to all preferences, we decided to create two different spaces, one set up in a daylight forest and the other in a nighttime, partly-surreal, experience.

These terrariums invite you to explore a peaceful moment anywhere, at any time, and find comfort in the soothing connection with nature for a better state of mind.
