Isolation of Tarlabaşı, Beyoğlu

My 'Urban Planning and Design' project for Mimar Sinan Fine Art University

The objective of the project is to establish a self-sufficient Tarlabaşı that integrates seamlessly with the city, devoid of invisible borders, while preserving the historical and architectural value of the region and providing social security to its inhabitants. To achieve this, the first step was to determine the requisites of the local population. Subsequently, a scenario was crafted to support the understanding of life in Tarlabaşı, and a complementary design was developed to promote the concept of cohabitation.

After evaluating the analysis and considering the prevailing issues, strategies and objectives were established, consisting of three key components. These goals include achieving solutions for resettlement, income generation, income enhancement, social development, and integration. The goals were concurrently addressed to ensure that the issues were resolved in tandem.

Collective spaces in memory were selected to foster the idea of cohabitation. These spaces include temporary accommodation areas, shared houses, co-production areas, work areas, open stages, and urban gardens. Rather than resolving each function in separate structures, empty buildings were evaluated collectively, creating spaces that facilitated interaction between private and public areas. The concept of the “courtyard,” which hosted collective events in the past, was revived.

The project aims to reharmonize the urban networks by connecting and reinterpreting thresholds and borders, which are the physical manifestations of the socio-political conflict within Tarlabaşı. The primary objective is to create areas for interaction and dialogue.

In conclusion, Tarlabaşı is an integral part of the city's identity. This project aims to conserve the region's distinctiveness and depth while preventing its obliteration from the city's collective memory.
