A mural for the inside of Trader Joe's Store #51. The goal was to create a piece that would cover the store's entryway window, while also utilizing the space to celebrate the location's history as the original Trader Joe's. The design combines inspiration from woodblock illustration styles often used in Trader Joe's branding, as well as visual nods to the store's location in Pasadena, California.
The mural's location is right behind where flower bouquets are displayed, the first space that customers pass through when entering Store #51. This area felt like a great opportunity for adding extra interest to the entryway of the store, as well as an opportunity to make the flowers pop in the space.
When approaching my design, I wanted the mural to feel cohesive with the rest of the permanent signage found throughout the store. Much of the existing signs draw inspiration from woodblock illustrations, as well as imagery in-line with Trader Joe's store wide nautical theme. I gathered reference from existing signage, Trader Joe's branding (hibiscus flowers, palm trees, seafaring imagery), Trader Joe's reusable bag designs, as well as the store's physical location on Arroyo Parkway in Pasadena, CA (roses to reference Pasadena's nickname as "The City of Roses" and red crowned parrots which can be found all around the Los Angeles area).
Once the design was approved, it was time to transfer the image to eucalyptus hardboard panels and start painting (painting assistance by Beck Serna). The finished panels were then installed in the store's entryway, breathing new life into the space and welcoming shoppers to the first Trader Joe's location.
