In our Graphic Design I class, we embarked on learning about influential graphic designers, seeking to understand their unique styles and contributions to the field. Among these luminaries, I found inspiration in the pioneering work of Lester Beall, whose innovative approach to design continues to resonate decades after his life. Beall’s mastery lay in his ability to distill complex messages into simple yet impactful visual compositions. His work for the Rural Electrification Administration in the 1940s exemplifies this ethos, as he utilized bold color blocks and dynamic typography to communicate with clarity and resonance.
For my project, I sought to emulate Beall’s iconic style while infusing it with a contemporary twist. Drawing from his use of bold typefaces like Rockwell and his skillful manipulation of primary colors and directional diagonals, I crafted a poster that paid homage to his legacy. However, I also pushed the boundaries by introducing an element of depth through the illusion of perspective lines emanating from a pencil tip, symbolizing the endless possibilities inherent in the creative process.
