Period Poverty: A Story of Silent Struggle
Introduction
Period poverty refers to low – income women and girls face problems trying to afford menstrual products like tampons, sanitary napkins, or period pads. In addition, lacks proper hygiene facilities and education related to menstruation are considered as period poverty too (Azizah Rusly, 2023). According to former Minister of Finance, Tengku Zafrul (2021), the aspects of health and hygiene of teenage women are very crucial to reduce any risks to health and dropouts from school. An estimation of 130,000 teenage women from B40 households in Malaysia are not accessible to menstrual products because of financial constraints.
Storyline
This PSA – “A Story of Silent Struggle” is talking about a university girl who couldn’t afford to buy menstrual products. When her menstruation period is around the corner, she went to convenience store to look for menstrual products. After looking at the price tag, when signed and walk away. One day in campus, period leaks happened suddenly without any preparation. The girl rushed to the toilet and struggling alone inside the toilet. She then uses a stack of tissue paper to replace the menstrual pads. This PSA show the protagonist is suffering and struggling alone with no one by her side. This also portraited the reality of women that feel ashamed and afraid to ask for help when it comes to the topic of period shame. The name of this PSA – “A Story of Silent Struggle” is also inspired by the loneliness of the girl protagonist and how this topic is so overlooked by the society.
