Book Cover / The Bell Jar

“To the person in the bell jar, blank and stopped
as a dead baby, the world itself is a bad dream”

Recently I read The Bell Jar, famous novel by Sylvia Plath. I dived right into it without any research beforehand, so I was amazed to find out later that it’s an autobiographical piece.

The novel deals with heavy topics of mental illness and suicide, as well as overall female experience, which resonated with me deeply, so I decided to create a cover for it.
Even though it's blunt and straightforward, I decided to draw main character, Esther, in the bell jar.
I think it's truly perfectly depict the main theme of the book - feeling of being trapped in life.

Her uncomfortable pose and facial expression shows how she feels in this world, especially
as a young woman in society that has a very clear expectations of her.
Thank you!
