The goal of this project was to create two separate album covers for a preexisting album of my choice. One cover had to be typographic, and the other had to be illustrative. I chose to design covers for The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. After listening to the whole album, I had a brainstorming session and typed out five adjectives which I felt embodied the album. I would use these descriptors as a guideline for what I should be trying to convey with my designs.
For my typographic design, I went for a literal approach to the material by having the album title actually be in the dark side of the moon. I would also have the size and shape of the type vary wildly to reflect the experimental and occasionally chaotic nature of the album. As a fun extra detail, I replaced some of the curves in the type with a crescent moon shape. In contrast, I would decide to use more surreal elements in my illustrative design to convey the how the album reflects on human nature. The eye can symbolize many things, but it most typically represents the soul or revelation. This made it a perfect choice to be used in this project. Taking influence from Rene Magritte's painting The False Mirror, I placed a crescent moon over the iris of the eye to relate it back to the title of the album. I would further expand on these ideas for the two back album covers.
Finally, I made mockups of the two designs as vinyl records to show how they would look if actually made into physical album covers.
