Jewelry and Metals: Meaning Found

This is a project on Metals and Found objects that I took up, during my exchange programme in Penny Stamps School of Art and Design, University of Michigan. The aim of the project was to understand the meaning of found objects when contained and tranformed into contemporary jewelry.

It made me explore the various possibilities of treating metals to make Artistic Jewelry. The main two metals we used were Brass and Copper. But as the found objects were to be incorporated in the designs, I got to explore various other materials as well. Along with that, various techniques such as Soldering, Etching, Hammering, Riveting, Polishing, Stamping the metal and the Finishing techniques were introduced to me.
The first piece I made was a broach, inspired from a story that occured in my life. I incorporated Indian currency coins, along with a stud from a earring, a piece from behind of a key and copper plate and wire to make this piece. This being the first time I was treating the metal all by myself, I tried to explore different kinds of techniques and get accustomed to them.
The three pendants are a part of a series I created on the theme of Fears and Phobias that exist among people. The concept of Phobias has always fascinated me and with this project I tried to incorporate it in a form that could be aesthetically pleasing.

The three Phobias I focused on for these pendants are: Fear of Food- Cibophobia, Fear of Mirrors- Spectrophobia, Fear of Holes- Trypophobia.
