The objective of this exercise was to effectively select the detailed hair/fur of the subject and place it front of text, complete with other text and design elements to produce a realistic magazine cover.

Behind the Scenes
Step 1: The before image was placed into Photoshop, and the Select and Mask feature was implemented. Refine Hair was used as well to further select the individual hairs as best as possible.

Step 2: For further cleanup, the Refine Edge brush was used along the perimeter of the subject, and then a layer mask was created from the whole selection.

Step 3: Using the Overlay blend mode, the mask was filled in with the brush tool to limit transparency along the edges, making the mask more precise.
