Lightbox Magazine

Lightbox: Design your future
First edition publication of a design magazine

The project brief.

The brief was to design the complete first edition of a new design publication, including creation of the name and logo/masthead. The publication is a multi-spread magazine with an editor’s letter and imprint information, contents page and three articles.

The solution.

Lightbox magazine is contemporary and minimalist in design, with a monochromatic colour scheme and basic shapes used as the main design elements to bring visual interest to each spread. The text was organised using a grid system to create a clean layout and balanced with image and white space to ensure readability and visual appeal.

The name comes from the lightbox tool which is used across design and commercial industries for things like photography, illustration, and marketing, and is inspired by the idea of ‘having a lightbulb moment’ and being a ‘box full of new ideas’.

A sepia colour scheme was chosen for the design elements to help create visual interest and continuity across the cover and spreads. It also acted as a reference to photography, the topic of the publication’s feature article.

The decision to use a separate colour scheme for the feature article helped the spread stand out as a main article and was intended to compliment the work of the photographer who was interviewed.
