2+8+35=?

The project brief challenged us to create a dancing space within an existing building to accomate 2 tutors, 8 performers and 35 spectators.
The space had to incorporate both the logistics that make a building work as well as allow the dancers to explore the space creatively.

Concept

From an existing image of two dancers in a latex membrane I recreated and photographed my own model that inspired my design throughout.

I experimented with the overall shape of the model inside the building. Imagining that the shape is hollow the interior would be public space and the exterior private only access by tutors and dancers.
Development

I developed a structure that represents a dancer in movement.
In reallity this is a tensile structure that runs through the whole building from ground to top floor, creating a canopy on the fourth floor.
The route that runs inside the tensile structure is the dancers performace space. The different ramps and staircases that link the floor levels as well as the tensile walls allow the dancers to use the space in a creative way.
