I made a poster to advertise and represent the font Bodoni MT Std which was designed in 1798 by the Italian Giambattista Bodoni. Even though it was created over a century ago, Bodoni is still considered a modern, elegant, and refined typeface that has been used in a wide variety of settings. I was inspired by some of its shapes and the contrast between thin and thick strokes, and some nice curves with circular endings.
I started my process by doing some research about the history of the font and the life of the designer Giambattista Bodoni. Then I made some pen sketches to explore some ideas on how I could represent the information.
I picked some of the compositions from my sketches to make digitally. But I was thinking that my compositions were safe, and I still wanted to push my design.
I started working on composition #6 and arranging the letters in different sizes and rotations. Then when I decided to add symbols, I realized the curly brackets looked like the top of a lip. I started to explore the idea of making a face with glyphs. Later, when I rotated the letter Q, I realized that it looked like a smokey eye. So, my imagination started to run wild.
At the beginning, I had different glyphs for making the hair and I tried different options, but I wasn’t satisfied yet until I thought about making the hair out of sentences from the history and information about the font.
With some feedback from peers, instructor, and family members, I was able to refine my design until I got the final design that I am presenting here. I really enjoyed making this project, I worked hard, and I am happy with the results. I hope you enjoy it too.
