Illustrating Tension Pneumothorax: A Visual Journey into Pathology
As a medical illustrator, I’m passionate about demystifying complex medical conditions through art. In my latest work, I’ve delved into the intricate world of tension pneumothorax, aiming to provide clarity and understanding.

What Is Tension Pneumothorax?
Tension pneumothorax is a critical condition where air accumulates in the pleural space, exerting immense pressure on the lung and surrounding structures. Imagine a delicate balance disrupted—a lung struggling for space, a heart compressed, and a life hanging in the balance.

The Artistic Approach
My goal was to capture the essence of this pathology. Through meticulous strokes and attention to detail, I’ve depicted the following key elements:
Collapsed Lung: The lung, once full of life-giving air, now deflated—a stark reminder of the body’s vulnerability.
Trapped Air: The pleural space, usually a sanctuary for lung expansion, becomes a prison. Air, relentless in its pursuit, pushes boundaries.
Clinical Signs: Tracheal deviation, shallow breaths, and the telltale absence of breath sounds—all woven into the canvas.
