TRIPLEX MODEL SHOE
I was tasked with creating a 1:1 scale model of one of my shoes that has relative amounts of complexity to it. The time given for the assignment was 1 week. I was only permitted to use triplex board as the material for the shoe as well as glue and some cutting tools.
Activity 1: Full Model Shoe
As this was my first time working with Triplex there were a number of challenges. I started with tracing the sole of the shoe by placing masking tape on it and tracing on it, then transferring the tape to the sheet of Triplex and cutting it out. Cutting the material with a craft knife was simple enough except for cutting rounded edges. I built up the sole and kept it hollow to save material, I just added supports for structural strength. I ten again used masking tape to trace the shape of the upper part of the shoe, and cut it out in the Triplex. I could not bend it all the way around the front of the shoe, so I had to cut it through the middle. The laces were simple as I just cut strips and glued them from hole to hole. For the details on the sole of the shoe I printed a scale photo of the sole and used that to trace and cut the shapes as well as using it to align the cut outs to the bottom.
Activity 2: Half Model Shoe
Activity 3: Tool Block Model Shoe
For the last activity I was tasked to create a mirror imprint of the shoe. A tooling block mould will help understand how the block is used when creating products. It was confusing at times working with the inverse footprint but visualizing it helped a lot. because the inside would be hidden making braces was a lot easier so getting the form right wasn't too challenging.
