For my Design literacy project I chose to research the Iris Lacustris, a species of iris. The Iris Lacustris, is a wild species found in the Carolinian zone, it features thick, blade-like leaves and stems supporting one to three flowers. Its flowers portray three large violet petals with delicate yellow, orange, and white accents, forming a geometric shape with three-sided symmetry when viewed from above. Unfortunately, its population has begun to drop due to habitat modification, climate change, and human encroachment, leading to its classification as a special concern under the federal species at risk act. The flower is personally meaningful due to my childhood memories, the Iris serves as the centerpiece for this project aiming to raise awareness about the flower. Inspired by Marimekko's designs, my project will create a versatile pattern applicable to various fashion items and household goods.
